Our Story - City Signworks

Built on 30 Years of Business Experience

For more than 30 years, I've worked alongside small to mid-sized business owners in the heavy equipment and construction industries. Along the way, I saw firsthand the grit, risk, and determination it takes to build something successful and gained a deep respect for entrepreneurs who put their name on the door.

As I looked toward building my own business, I researched many industries and was drawn to signage because it's creative, always in demand, and often the front door to a company's growth. I also noticed a gap: too many sign companies focus on production first and listening second.

City Signworks was built to change that by leading with a consultative, listening-first approach that helps businesses choose signage that truly supports their goals.

The Problem We Saw

Before City Signworks, the Columbus signage landscape looked much like it did decades ago. Sign shops operated on outdated models slow quotes, missed deadlines, inconsistent communication, and a transactional approach that left clients frustrated. If you were a general contractor racing to meet a multi-family development deadline or a property manager coordinating signage across multiple locations, you were often left managing the sign vendor instead of focusing on your core business.

Building permit notice stapled to plywood sheathing at a wood framed construction site.

The industries we serve construction, commercial real estate, skilled trades, healthcare, financial services, and retail were modernizing rapidly. Project management software, digital communication tools, and data-driven decision making had become standard. Yet signage vendors hadn't kept pace. The disconnect was glaring.

Working with business owners across Central Ohio, I heard the same complaints repeatedly:

"I can never get a straight answer on timeline."
"The quote took two weeks, and by then the project had already moved forward."
"They installed the wrong sign and blamed us for the miscommunication."
"I spent more time managing the sign company than I did on actual project work."

These weren't isolated incidents. They were symptoms of an industry that had stopped evolving to meet its customers' needs.

The Vision: Listening First, Production Second

City Signworks was founded on a different approach: Lead with listening, then execute with precision.

What does that mean in practice?

It means understanding that when a general contractor orders construction site signage, they're not buying a sign. They're managing stakeholder expectations, maintaining professional appearances, meeting regulatory requirements, and often working under intense timeline pressure. The signage partner needs to understand these priorities and execute accordingly.

When a property manager needs monument signs or wayfinding systems, they're protecting property value, enhancing tenant experience, and maintaining brand consistency across portfolios. That requires a partner who sees the bigger picture.

When an HVAC company invests in fleet graphics, they're making a strategic marketing decision that directly impacts lead generation and brand recognition. The signage partner needs to approach the project with that level of strategic thinking.

When a medical practice needs ADA-compliant signage or a bank requires professional branch identification, they need a partner who understands that signage reflects their commitment to their clients.

We built City Signworks to deliver that level of understanding and execution.

Building the Foundation: Columbus First

From day one, we committed to being deeply rooted in Columbus. This wasn't just about having a local address it was about understanding the unique dynamics of the Central Ohio market.

We studied the permitting requirements across Columbus municipalities. We built relationships with contractors, property managers, and business owners overseeing the region's growth. We learned the seasonal challenges that Columbus weather presents for installations. We tracked the expansion in neighborhoods like New Albany, Dublin, and Hilliard.

This local expertise became one of our greatest competitive advantages. While national chains sent quotes from call centers in other states, we walked job sites. While online vendors offered generic solutions, we provided recommendations based on actual knowledge of Columbus codes and conditions.

Modernizing Operations

Understanding our clients' needs was only half the equation. We also needed to operate differently.

We invested in technology and processes that most sign shops had ignored:

Streamlined Consultation Process

We built workflows that deliver accurate proposals in hours, not weeks. Clients receive detailed breakdowns that explain exactly what they're paying for and why.

These weren't revolutionary ideas they were standard practices in the industries we served. We simply applied them to signage.

The Industries We've Come to Serve

From storefront channel letters to welcoming monument signs, we help businesses create the visual identity that attracts customers and builds community presence.

What Drives Us Today

Listen first, then make signage easy for professionals who have more important things to worry about.

Every project we take on whether it's a single vehicle wrap for a startup plumbing company or a comprehensive signage package for a 200-unit multi-family development receives the same commitment to professional execution.

We measure success not by how many signs we sell, but by how much stress we remove from our clients' plates. When a property manager tells us, "I didn't have to think about signage once you just handled it," that's a win. When a contractor says, "You're the only vendor who actually hit the deadline," that's what we're built for.
